Wilderness First Aid
February 18, 2023 – February 19, 2023
Wilderness First Aid (WFA) is the assessment of and treatment given to an ill or injured person in a remote environment where definitive care of a physician and/or rapid transport is not readily available. This 16 hour course will provide you with the skills and confidence to assess and treat trauma and illnesses in the backcountry where help is more than an hour away. For Scouting BSA Leaders, this training will prepare you to take a unit to a high adventure base.
Minimum age for this course is 16.
Course Schedule:
- Friday, 5-8 pm: Early checkin
- Saturday, 7:30 am: Checkin
- Saturday, 8 am: Class Starts
- Saturday, 12 pm: Lunch
- Saturday, 5 pm: Class Ends
- Sunday, 8 am: Class Starts
- Sunday, 12 pm: Lunch
- Sunday, 5 pm: Class Ends
Course cost is $120.
Camping: Camping is optional. If you choose to camp, you can tent camp near the training location both Friday and Saturday nights. Course staff will be at Camp Westmoreland by 5pm on Friday to show you were to set up. You will have access to a bath house and can cook at your campsite.
Meals: You are responsible for your own meals. Please pack a lunch and snacks for both Saturday and Sunday. There will not be time to leave Camp Westmoreland to go get lunch.
Gear: You will need a day pack, water, and clothing layers to be out in the woods for 2-3 hours at a time. It’s February, so expect cold and perhaps rain. Unless there is lighting, we play in the rain.
Scenarios: We use wound makeup to make the scenarios realistic. Everyone will have a chance to be a patient during a scenario. Please wear older clothing that would be ok to get stained by makeup. If you have a young person, ages 12-16, who want to volunteer to be a patient for the weekend, please let us know.
